Cookie Month

Take a bite out of National Cookie Month with these delectable lessons. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.

Grades K-2
Read students the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. As a class, discuss the ridiculous chain of events set off by the simple act of giving a cookie to a hungry mouse. Then, have students imagine a series of events that might happen if they were given a cookie. Have students use Graphics software to draw a scene that combines five different things that might happen. Instruct students to use the text tool to write a sentence on each of the five events illustrated.
EasyTech units: Beginning Graphics

Grades 3-5
Have students use the Web to find a recipe for a favorite type of cookie. Have them use spreadsheet software to enter the ingredients and amounts, as well as the number of cookies the recipe produces. In additional columns on the spreadsheet, have students use their knowledge of fractions and multiplication to adjust the amount/number of ingredients required to double the recipe; to halve the recipe; to make 100 cookies; and to make enough cookies for each student in the school to get one.
EasyTech units: Web Browsing, Spreadsheet Basics, Formulas in Spreadsheets
Aha!Math units: Fractions, Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimals

Grades 6-8
Have students bring a favorite cookie recipe from home. Using online grocery sites, have them find prices for each of the ingredients (adjusted for the amount they need) and enter the information into a spreadsheet. How much does it cost to make the recipe? How much does it cost per cookie? Then have students find prices for pre-packaged cookies as well as place-and-bake cookie dough and add that information to their spreadsheet. How much do each of those options cost per cookie? What is the most economical cookie? How do the cookies compare in other ways, such as calories, fat, sodium, etc.?
EasyTech units: Web Browsing, Spreadsheet Software
Aha!Math units: Adding and Subtracting of Fractions and Decimals, Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Decimals
