Games & Puzzles
Go ahead and play! The third week in November is National Game and Puzzle Week. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
Have students choose their three favorite games and use Visual Mapping software to make a visual map that illustrates similarities and differences in the games. What elements tie the favorites together? When they are finished, have students use Word Processing software to write a paragraph that begins “I like games that…” and goes on to explain what sort of game the student most enjoys.

Grades 3-5
Ask students to choose a topic that they are currently studying as part of their core curriculum. Then have them use Word Processing software to create a crossword puzzle with clues related to that topic and a word find puzzle with key terms. Instruct students to use tables and drawing tools as appropriate to structure their puzzles. Students can use the Web to research interesting clues, answers, and words. When finished, have students swap their puzzles with another student, and complete each other’s. Can they finish it without research? How about once they are able to use the Web to help with the clues? (Also, before or after making their own, have kids try the crossword puzzle maker and word find maker at Discovery Education).

Grades 6-8
Many popular games are now played online, allowing competition, collaboration, and communication between gamers with similar interests and skill-levels from around the world. Have students choose a favorite game and re-interpret it as an online game. Students should use Presentation software to develop a multimedia presentation explaining how the online game would work, what rules would need to be changed, and how interaction and communication would play enhance the game. Have students share their presentations with the class.
