Phobias
Don’t be scared! Halloween is the perfect time to confront fears, and to learn about them! Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.
Grades K-2
As a class, discuss what phobias are. Then have each student use Graphics software to draw a picture of something they are afraid of. Students should use the text tool to write a sentence about the phobia. When finished, have students swap their files with a partner. The other person should add to the original picture: adding an idea of how the phobia might be dealt with or confronted, and adding a sentence explaining the solution. (For example: Student 1 draws a picture of their dark room and writes that they are scared of the dark; Student 2 adds a nightlight to the drawing, and writes that a nightlight might help them not be afraid.)

Grades 3-5
Have each student choose a different phobia from the Phobia List (see links below). Then have students use the Web to research the phobia and use Presentation software to create a multimedia presentation. The presentation should include general information about the phobia, statistics (and charts or graphs), information about treating the phobia, and resources for more information. Have students share their presentations with the class. After each presentation, ask students for a show of hands of how many people are afraid of the featured topic.

Grades 6-8
Have students imagine that they are a therapist with a support group for people with phobias. Students should use Word Processing software to create a newsletter that would be distributed to the group. The newsletter should include articles, data, interesting facts, and tips for dealing with phobias. Encourage students to give their newsletter a catchy name, and to include graphics. Students should use the Web for research and should keep the audience of the newsletter in mind as they create content.
