Space Week

Blast off into World Space Week (October 4-10) with these out-of-this-world activities. Each of these activities meets a variety of state and national standards for technology and core subject areas.

Grades K-2
Show students a diagram of the solar system and discuss the many different things that are in the solar system (planets, stars, rocks, etc.). Have students use Visual Mapping software to create their own map of the solar system, organizing information in a way that makes sense to them. Encourage students to include as many specific things as they can think of (i.e., specific planets, star names, comet names, etc.) and to label them.
EasyTech units: Visual Mapping Basics

Grades 3-5
Have students use the Web to research 10 interesting facts about space, the solar system, planets, etc. Have them type their interesting facts in Word Processing software. Then, tell students to imagine that it is the future and they are on a vacation to somewhere in space. Have students use Word Processing software to write a letter to a friend or family member back home (on Earth), telling them about their vacation (where they are, what it is like, what they are doing). Students should use the Web for additional research on their vacation spot and should combine fiction with fact in their letters. Interwoven in the body of the letter, students must include each of the 10 interesting facts they identified at the beginning of the exercise in boldface.

Aha!Science units: Astronomy, The Solar System, Composition of the Solar System

Grades 6-8
Have students work in groups of four to six to make a board game about space. Students should use Word Processing software to type rules and Graphics or Word Processing software to create a game board. The goal of the game should be to get from Pluto to the Sun first. Each group’s game should showcase knowledge of space and the solar system in some way (such as trivia questions or special cards that describe a space fact and make something happen in the game). Students should use the Web for research. When the games are finished, have groups trade with each other to play a different group's game.
